Boston Red Sox: Red Sox designate Hanley Ramirez for assignment

In his final season of a 4-year, $88 million dollar contract, the Red Sox decided to cut ties with the third baseman this morning. This season, Hanley Ramirez started the season off with a solid start but recently he is in a 0-20 slump and with the returning Dustin Pedroia the team felt like it was time.

Hanley Ramirez, 34, leaves Boston with a $22 million vesting option in 2019 should he have 497 plate appearances but that has been waived due to the designation. Now a free agent, Ramirez should easily latch on to another team who is looking to add depth in the infield. We would predict teams like Washington and Toronto to have possible interest. (Source: Boston Globe)

Houston Astros: Houston Astros release 1B Jonathan Singleton

  • Once a promising prospect rising through the Phillies/Astros system, Singleton had a solid showing in 2016 but nothing to show for since then. Singleton, 26, has been dealing with drug abuse as he recently tested positive for a third time suspending him for 100 games this season. With 2018 a lost season for Singleton, he will likely get another shot with another team once his suspension is up and this situation is under control. He will still have a lot of questions surrounding him once he resumes his career.  (Source: MLB Daily Dish)

San Diego Padres: According to Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune, the Padres are planning on promoting prospect Franmil Reyes from AAA-Tuscon. In 36 games this season for Tuscon, Reyes is batting .346 with 14 home runs and 38 RBI’s.

The Padres are in need of another power bat with Hunter Renfroe and Wil Myers out. Adding Reyes in the lineup alongside Hosmer and once Myers and Renfroe return from their DL stint the Padres could have a very solid all-around batting order. The impending promotion of Reyes from AAA will have the Padres demote or designate a player for assignment, we should know this within in the next 24 hours. Check back for more.  Baltimore Orioles: Orioles acquired 3B Renato Nunez off waivers from Texas Rangers

After 13 games with the Rangers this season, the Rangers waived Renato Nunez. Nunez had a slash line of .167/.244/.522 this season with the Rangers. The Baltimore Orioles just placed Tim Beckham Jr. on the 60-day disabled list which opened up the door for Nunez to take his roster spot. Danny Valencia is inked in as the starter at third as Nunez will likely be used as a reserve infielder/outfielder due to experience in the in and outfield.
