Review of Raw August 28, 2017

Raw started off tonight with Miz and the Miztourage making an appearance. Miz begins to rant but is cut off Raw General Manager Kurt Angle. Angle announces Miz will be defending his title next week against the winner of the 15-Man Battle Royal Match that starts now! And with that the participants begin to make their entrances.

Match 1: 15-Man Battle Royal #1 Contender Match for the WWE Intercontinental Championship

Big Show vs. Curtis Axel vs. Bo Dallas vs. Jeff Hardy vs. Matt Hardy vs. Finn Balor vs. Jason Jordan vs. Curt Hawkins vs. R-Truth, Kalisto vs. Goldust vs. Apollo Crews vs. Luke Gallows vs. Karl Anderson vs. Elias Samson

This match starts full of action and never lets up. This match see some team work and a few surprises. As superstars are being eliminated one after another, Finn Balor begins to take control of the bout! However as he stops to celebrate as the only man standing in the ring, the lights go out. They come back on as Bray Wyatt throws Balor over the top rope and eliminates him from the match. Immediately after the lights cut off then right back on and Bray is no where to be seen!

The action continues with only Jeff Hardy, Elias Samson, Curtis Axel, Bo Dallas, and Jason Jordan remaining. Jordan begins to take control of the match and eliminates both members of the Miztourage at the same time! Then Jordan takes out Elias but is eliminated himself right after! Making the winner and now #1 contender for the WWE Intercontinental Championship by way of elimination, Jeff Hardy! He will now take on Miz next week on Raw for the title.

Match 2: Enzo Amore vs. Noam Dar

If you remember, not long ago I wrote an article that warned Enzo Amore would be move to 205 Live due to backstage issues. Sure enough, that’s exactly what happened to him. Enzo would take control from the start and not let it go. Enzo made short work of his opponent and beat him in just 175 seconds! This got the attention of WWE Cruiserweight Champion Neville who claimed he would, “be champion forever”. Let’s see if I’ll be right again with my prediction that Enzo will become the WWE Cruiserweight champion.

WWE Universal Championship Match Promo

After all that, Brock Lesnar and Paul Hayman made their way to the ring to trash talk Brian Strowman and hype their match. Lesnar would end up translating everything that Heyman said with a single sentence and the two would leave. Brock vs. Brian is going to be a big match in many different ways. At No Mercy two of the biggest, most animal like wrestlers in the universe will battle for the title of WWE Universal Champion! No matter what, that match is going to be huge.

Match 3: Cesaro vs. Seth Rollins

Rollins would take control of this match basically from the bell. Rollins would continue to control the match until Cesaro nails him with a “Tilt-A-Whirl” backbreaker which stopped Rollins instantly! After that Cesaro would begin to take control of the match now. Shortly after that, Rollins becomes distracted by a fight outside the ring and is nailed by a “European Uppercut” from Cesaro! The winner via pin fall by way of “European Uppercut”, Cesaro.

Match 4: Sheamus vs. Dean Ambrose

This match was a surprise from Sheamus who announced that he and Ambrose were next, right after their partners had fought. Sheamus would regret this overall however. This match was basically a brawl instead of a wrestling match from the start! After beating each other for over ten minutes, both superstars would receive a little outside help. However Cesaro wasn’t much help as he distracted the ref accidentally as Rollins nailed Sheamus with a knee to the face! Dean Ambrose uses the help and wins the match via pin fall by way of “Dirty Deeds”.

Match 5: Emma vs. Mickie James

This match was over super fast! Mickie James started by dominating Emma by kicking her to the ground multiple times. However Emma would take the most of an opening and gets James in a roll up pin. This match was over in less than 103 seconds with kind of a comeback win even! The winner via pin fall by way of roll up pin, Emma.

John Cena vs. Roman Reigns Contract Signing

This was really epic and definitely a “shoot” promo from the start! Cena really escalated things by mocking Roman as Roman couldn’t think of anything to say. Cena reminded Reigns, “this is called a promo, and if you’re gonna be top dog you gotta be able to do one.” Roman and Cena both signed the contract to make the match official and actually looked like they may start swinging on each other right then and there! But before they got to each other they were interrupted by a surprise match(probably to calm them down).

Match 6: Anderson and Gallows vs. John Cena and Roman Reigns

This match wasn’t too impressive really. Anderson and Gallows basically beat on Cena the whole match until he made the tag to Roman. Roman comes in and cleans house with some help from Cena. Then Cena nails Gallows with an AA at the exact second that Reigns blast Anderson with a spear! The winners are Cena and Reigns via pin fall by way of “Spear”.

Elias’ Song

Elias Samson came out after we came back from break. Elias began to play a song insulting the fans of course but got cut short this time. Wrestling legend Jerry “The King” Lawler(who was filling in for Booker T who couldn’t make it due to Hurricane Harvey) interrupted the song to debut a wrestler from a local independent promo. Elias beat the poor guy badly for a little bit before making his exit. Making the only thing worse than Elias’ song, the beating he dished out to Elvis impostor pretending to be a wrestler.

Main Event: Sasha Banks vs. Alexa Bliss for the WWE Raw Women’s Championship

This match was awesome and was better than the 15-Man Battle Royal that started the show! This was a real battle of a match that went back and forth the whole match! However towards the end of the match, Bliss sends the face of Banks into the turnbuckle! A top rope suplex followed but due to boasting, Bliss finds herself locked in the “Bank Statement”! She reverses though and after a failed pin, she nails Banks with a DDT for the win and the title! The winner and again WWE Raw Women’s Champion, Alexa Bliss.

Right after the match Nia Jax came down to the ring to celebrate with her best friend Alexa Bliss. Jax lifted Bliss up unto her should as the two smiled and celebrated. But then suddenly the smile left the face of Jax and she then gives Bliss a backdrop out of no where! Nia then stands over the top of Bliss while holding the title and looking down at her. It appears that Nia Jax is now more interested in “championships” than she is in “friendships”.

Walker’s Words of Wisdom

This Raw was good, but I think was inconstantly entertaining throughout. That said the first match was awesome. It would be great for wrestling fans to get to see Jeff Hardy win the Intercontinental Championship and really complete his return to wrestling. I myself can’t wait to watch Miz vs. Jeff Hardy for the title next week! But after the first match, things didn’t really get good again until the Cena and Reigns contract signing and shoot promos. That was epic and you definitely have to watch it if you haven’t already.

I would watch the first match(15-Man Battle Royal), the main event(Sasha Banks vs. Alexa Bliss for the WWE Raw Women’s Championship), and definitely the Cena and Reigns contract signing and shoot promos. All the rest is worth watching for sure but if you skip it you don’t miss anything you haven’t seen before. I would rate this Raw a 5 out of 10 because after the first match the energy level of the show seemed to drop until the Cena and Reigns contract signing and shoot promos. But because they had a title match, great promos, and a 15-Man Battle Royal to start the night, I would say check this one out for sure.
