A former 1st round pick during the Chip Kelly Era in Philadelphia, the Eagles released Marcus Smith from their roster.
The cards were in play that the Eagles were prepared to move on from Marcus Smith at some point as they declined his 5th-year option and have decided to release him entirely today. The releasing of Marcus Smith saves the Eagles money as they will be off the hook for paying him his $594,000 roster which would have totaled over $1 million dollars this season.
Since breaking into the league in 2014 Marcus Smith really never transitioned well with the Philadelphia Eagles. Marcus Smith was drafted as a linebacker but was then converted to defensive end and that still did not work well in favor of Marcus Smith. Entering training camp, Marcus Smith was likely on the roster-bubble as the Eagles are stacked on their line with the addition of Derek Barnett and Chris Long, Marcus Smith was just being buried on the Eagles depth chart.
Now on the free agent market, Marcus Smith, 25, still in the prime of his career should get some interest on the free agent market from teams who are looking to add depth to their defense.
