Here are some of the latest news and updates happening around Major League Baseball on January 16th.
- The Cleveland Indians signed former KBO League pitcher Travis Banwart to a minor league contract. Banwart left the Indians for KBO back in July of 2014.
- The New York Yankees signed former Los Angeles Angels first baseman Ji-Man Choi to a minor league contract. He will compete for bench role with the Yankees this spring. Choi was designated for assignment by the Angels back in December and did not accept his AAA outright. Choi finished 2016 with a .170 average, 5 home runs and 12 RBI’s.
- Free agent first baseman Chris Carter’s agent has said that he spoke with the Baltimore Orioles and the Texas Rangers on possible a contract. It was reported earlier in the off season that the Oakland Athletics had interest in bringing back Carter but nothing has since came of it. Carter’s agent Dave Stewart will later say that his client is not yet close to signing with anyone soon.
- St. Louis Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said that there will be a battle this Spring Training for the starting third baseman job and it will be between Jhonny Peralta and Jedd Gyorko.
