Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports has confirmed that the San Diego Padres and the Toronto Blue Jays are close to a deal that will send outfielder Melvin Upton Jr. to the Blue Jays in exchange for a A-level prospect.
The saga of Melvin Upton Jr. getting traded is finally coming to an end. After days of many teams being interested in the younger Upton the Blue Jays were able to get the upper hand of the deal.
After having a disappointing last couple of seasons between the San Diego Padres and the Atlanta Braves, his 2016 campaign with the Padres has possibly been his best season in years. So far this season Upton has demonstrated that he has pop in his bat as he has crushed the ball 16 times and has drove in 45 RBI’s in the process.
Melvin Upton will be joining an outfield that has an exciting set of stars from Jose Bautista, Kevin Pillar and Michael Saunders. Upon switching locker rooms (the Padres are in Toronto for a series) Upton is looking being an #2 outfielder in Toronto as Pillar is more consistent hitter than Melvin Upton is at this stand point in time.
The deal could be finalized as early as this morning, per Ken Rosenthal.
